I'm sure most of you will recognise the style of StarBlaster, its a space based shooting game with the usual meteors and other perilous objects that need to be destroyed to ensure the safety of humanity! Its actually quite a fun game, one of those annoying bits of software that you'll play over and over again trying to beat your highest score. I think this is down to the relatively simple gameplay, it follows the age old saying, easy to learn, difficult to master.

StarBlaster
StarBlaster
As you progress through the levels (as many as 30 I am told!) you'll encounter more exotic enemies/objects and also gain better powerups alowing you to guard yourself and blast those targets to pieces with greater effect. Graphically it is pretty good, in fact it is exactly what I would want from such a game, its not the kind of game that is going to blow your mates away in the pub but they will want to play it again and again to beat your top score! High scores are stored with the inclusion of a three digit initial entry to personalise your proudest victories!

It plays well, no lag and smooth, easy to control gameplay, and is compatible with the e200 joystick as it does not require the use of diagonal movement (good news!) as it uses left and right (the game is played in the landscape orientation) to rotate the ship and up to increase the speed of your movement (the ships slow down gradually once you lift off the accelerator). You can also flip the screen in the options menu to allow for left and right handed use.

There are three ships to choose from, each with their own offerings (different weapons, liveries and, i imagine, armour). The game weighs in at £6.99, a reasonable price for a game that is well put together and very playable. To summarise, StarBlaster is a game that fits it purpose, it is a great way to waste time trying to beat your highest scores, i will definately be playing it in the future.

Praise has to be given to GameOnTheGo for producing such a playable game on their first attempt. Marc

What GameOnTheGo have to say about StarBlaster:

Take to the stars for hours of rock-blasting action! Classic gameplay meets twenty-first century visuals in Gameonthego's first release. It is the distant future, and the Earth has finally been destroyed. The remnants of humanity have fled the expanding sun in a great fleet of starships and began their search for a new home. Adrift in the vastness of space, the last children of the earth wandered for a century, until by chance, they discovered a new world, beyond a great asteroid field. As a pilot of the elite Praetorius squadron, your task is to fly ahead of the human fleet and clear a path to their new world.

Features:

  • 30 levels
  • super-smooth animation
  • advanced special effects
  • intelligent enemies

StarBlaster is available from GameOnTheGo for £6.99 HERE!
