Cast your mind back to the days of WM2003SE...
When news of the all singing, all dancing WM5 was released, everyone was pretty excited. One feature that was talked about back then has kinda stuck in my mind but everyone, including the carriers, seem to have forgotten about it. Patches instead of full upgrades. That's what they were telling us.
With WM5, you won't have to worry about backing up your device to perform a full ROM upgrade, all you need do is apply paches supplied by the carriers...they said. Where are they? To my knowledge only one carrier, Dopod, has made paches available for users. So what about the rest? Is making a full ROM upgrade easier than making patches? Are the other carriers just too lazy to make tham available?
Now, we could pose this question to the carriers but you can bet your life that we'll get fobbed off with some lame excuse. The problem is, issues like these aren't enough to stop people buying WM devices. As long as the carriers can continue to find that balance of giving us just enough to still want more, they'll have us just where they want us. They don't call us gadget junkies for nothing you know ;)
