With the Christmas period over i'm sure there are many of you out there that have received either a Smartphone or a Pocket PC as a gift, I was lucky enough to receive a ViewSonic V37 Pocket PC to add to my collection of gadgets and have to say that on the whole I am impressed with the device, HOWEVER, I could not imagine such a device in Phone Edition form taking the place of my Smartphone, not least because I would net feel comfortable carrying something that large around with me. The V37 has a 400mhz XScale processor which is lovely to use and I have a GPS kit on the way which will also ensure a place for the V37 in my useful gadgets list but I can now fully appreciate the key differences between a Smartphone and a Pocket PC. A Smartphone is a phone with added PDA functionality, it offers the synchronisation of contacts/calender entries/inbox etc. but will never take the place of the Pocket PC in the PDA market as it lacks the large screen and stylus input, something that Microsoft rightly chose to exclude from their speifications for a Smartphone so as to ensure easy one-handed use. I will write a full comparison of the similarities and differences of features on both devices in the near future once I have played with my new toy a little more but until then, the decision between a purchasing a Pocket PC Phone Edition or a Smartphone is, in my eyes an easy one. I will always want to carry with me a phone that is smaller than a standard PDA and as such the expected loss of certain PDA functionality has no bearing on my decision. I see the Smartphone's features as positives to a phone as opposed to viewing them as falling short of that of a Pocket PC.
