Ok, so I need to rant again so we have the standard disclaimer here, these are OwenÂ’s views, not that of MSMobileNews.com, they might cause offence etc... This time itÂ’s about people (mostly the stupid ones) and the C550.
It seems the vocal few who insist bitching about the C550 don’t know what they are talking about, the C550 is better than the C500, its just not the same amount of “betterness” that the e100 was to the original SPV, its more like the “betterness” from the E100 to the E200 (without the cock-up that was the battery/SD card thing).
So I will now insult as much of our readership as possible, and explain the details on 'the problems' or 'this phone is rubbish (remove bad words and replace them with child friendly alternatives in italic! - Marc), its going back' or any of the other rubbish that people keep saying
Usual Complaints, Factor or Fiction?
Nothing works on it: I have a C550 which I like a lot, yes some things donÂ’t work out of the box on it yet (TomTom, Explode Arena, Toki Tori and some others) but people have short memories, how many games worked out of the box on the c500 when it first came out? Err, it was like two or something! Get over it, the problems will be fixed soon enough and this was bound to happen with the change in screen resolution let alone any other issues that have been faced by the developers. The change in screen resolution had to come at some point so the sooner the better I say, the screen really does rock!
Its 7 grams heavier than my C500: YouÂ’re complaining that its seven grams heavier? What??!!!!! Seven grams is about the same as 7 cigarettes, a Biro weighs more, change for the coffee machine weighs more and if a phone being 7 grams heavier is a problem then youÂ’re picking holes fro the sake of it.
ItÂ’s fatter/bigger/more iPod-like than the c500: Err, its not a c500, it has a 'media-phone' look and feel to it, be happy the HTC designers havenÂ’t been smoking what the Nokia designers have (call off the angry lawyer dogs, Nokia designers probably arenÂ’t smoking crack, I made it up!)
The screen is 262k colours but only shows 65k colours: Err ok, all new TFT screens are 262k screens, its all they make and its not easy telling the difference between the 2 and I’m not even going near the “hmm 320x240 =76800, so that’s 76,800 pixels, and we will take off the 40 pixels for the button bar and the title bar and that gives us 64,000, and we have 65,000 colours, oohh too many colours to show on the screen!!!”
The cameraÂ’s rubbish: No, the camera isnÂ’t rubbish; itÂ’s just not as good as a CCD digital camera with optics and proper camera stuff!
The media player buttons are a waste of time: The media player buttons are useful in media player, yes it would be nice if we could use them in other apps as well, give the programming dudes some time, and maybe when they get a phone to test we will have apps that use them.
The battery sucks: Err, no it doesn’t, charge the phone correctly and turn on the screen timeout and the battery is as good as the C500 (agreed, I’ve just went a weekend of heavy phone use and loudspeaker music for about 45 mins and it still had approximately 50% charge left! – Marc)
Its not got Windows Mobile 5 on it: Windows Mobile 5 isnÂ’t due for release until November or something like that, and with regard to the fact that some games and applications donÂ’t work on the C550, which runs Windows Mobile 2003 SE, imagine what problems weÂ’ll face with a totally new operating system in Windows Mobile 5 (this is going on what the emulator does, and playing with someone elseÂ’s phone with the leaked wm5 image on it).
So there you have it, some people are stupid, the C550 is a good phone, it does a lot of stuff better than the older SPV's, its got multipress again, 35meg of free RAM to run things on, the screen rocks and the camera is the best yet of the SPV Smartphone range. Later Owen
