Whilst scanning my usual hotspots on the Internet I stumbled across an article by PC Magazine's Editor in Chief, Mars Mlodzinski who is discussing the interesting issue of whether mobile phones will ever replace the desktop PC or laptop. He makes some interesting points but there are a few things that i just can't ignore. He speaks of using the 'i-mate's Smartphone 2, which runs on Windows Smartphone 2003, and this OS is a massive resource hog – i-mate have put in a faster processor in their second embodiment of the Smartphone and even that hasn't helped, because navigating through the OS is still cumbersome', what can I say? Firstly there is more memory in the i-mate Smartphone 2 when compared to their first version but the processor, to the best of my knowledge, is exactly the same! He then goes on to conclude that readers who agree with him that mobile phones wont replace PC's are 'probably jumping up and down and screaming about the fact that these units also don't have proper keyboards, possess tiny screens and they can't play Quake'. Well he clearly hasn't been keeping up with the Smartphone world now has he! The Voq Smartphone has a fold-out full QWERTY keyboard, the Second Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 supports some great resolution increases and we all know that we have had Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D all running on our Smartphones!
Don't get me wrong, I can't see mobile phones replacing PC's, but then I assumed that most people thought this? I see the Smartphone as a great way to keep on top of your information whilst being mobile, that and waste time playing games and surfing the 'net!
