In order to fill a bit of the gap until Orange UK get around to releasing the new C500 ROM (probably sometime after they release a Windows Mobile 2010 device knowing Orange ;) ) I decided to take the plunge and risk turning my C500 in to a small yet functioning doorstop by installing the leaked Orange UK ROM that we told you about here.
Well after firing up the installer I noticed that things haven't changed and there's pretty much no mention of Orange anywhere during the process; as we saw with the previous update. My device was correctly (or incorrectly identified) as an 'Ontario' which is because of some previous 'modifications' that I won't go in to here, but skipping a few minutes my C500 rebooted with a nice Orange-esk homescreen - success, panic over!
Initial observations have found a few changes from what I remember of the last Orange UK ROM, many of them minor such as relocation of options, different wordings etc, oh and something called Windows Media Player 10. Here's what I've found so far, but there probably are more differences tucked away that I'm yet to find:
- Windows Media Player 10
Better media support, a library, playlists, and easier syncing with WMP10 on a PC - all the stuff you've been waiting for!
- Re-order of Messaging inboxes
Media Messages has been bumped up to number 1 in the list, relegating Text Messages to number 2; is this to subconsciously get more people to send MMS messages or what?
- Bluetooth COM Ports
The setup for these have been moved from the start menu into the Bluetooth section of 'Settings'. From the page to activate or disable Bluetooth there is a new menu option for COM Ports which takes you to a new area where you can configure incoming and outgoing ports. By default there are none setup so for connecting a BT GPS unit this extra step will have to be taken in to account.
A short list I know but I'm sure there are a couple of things I missed visually, but overall the C500 seems a little more responsive and quicker at loading applications and booting compared to the previous ROM.
Overall it's not quite anything to write home about but for a point-release it's not bad and finally brings Orange UK users up to date with what other device-owners have had for a long time.
Now all we have to do is wait for the ‘official’ release!
