Standard disclaimer, this is a little ranty and probably not the views of MSMobileNews.com or me for that matter, the people from Orange we work with on the site are great people, and this is just my view as a paying customer.

As some of you know, there was some expired certificate based fun here and Orange have some strange security policy settings and have broken the OTA unlock for the Windows Mobile devices.

Well, in a fit of cleverness and stuff I decided to get a signed certificate for the Exchange server, being cheap I went for a Geotrust one, all good you would think, "that's going to be fine for the Orange devices, its signed and all that", well nope, its broken for the trusty Orange devices.

So after a glass of Pinot, I thought "EQUIFAX!!" and remembered that they have a new root cert available, look its here http://www.geotrust.com/resources/root_certificates/index.asp

Its going to work, Equifax are huge, they do credit scoring, the banks trust them, its just a case of copying the CRT file onto the phone and running it, nope, didn't work, try it on some other devices, works on the MDA Pro, XDA minis, E100, E200, it even works on the P.O.S. Toshiba E310.

So this gets me thinking, which you all know is a bad thing, maybe Orange think most small business clients can afford the $399 Verisign charge per year for a cert, or maybe they're stupid, you never know, they axe half there call center staff and outsource it to somewhere random. I shall go off on a tangent,  on Saturday I thought "I know i'll call Orange and get them to unlock (SIM) one of the old handsets out of the draw" and got bored after the same 3 songs for 45 mins and being told that my call was important, and it wasn't even peak times, not even Vodafone are that bad and they come bottom of the customer surveys!

What am I trying to say? I know, Orange you suck at the moment, and I shall offer my quality business advice top tips:
1) Don't add stupid security settings to your phones, no one else does, but if you have to offer a speedy way to remove them out of the box, I don't want to have to wait for one of the hard working chaps/chappettes in the partner program to send me the security tool for 10 phones
2) Don't sack all your CSR's, one of your plus points was that i could call you guys at 2 in the morning and speak to someone with a brain, now its hit or miss if i speak to someone
3) If you release a great offer that might cause an increase in phonecalls, hire more phone answering people
4) ITEMISED DATA BILLING, I'll pay for GPRS if you can prove that i used it
5) Offer your data bundle to all your customers, the pink T will give you unlimited data and calls for less than a purple drinking voucher a month, why should I pay over twice that with you?
6) If you're releasing a new product or service that hits the news sites, please for all that is holy, tell the people who take the calls about it, also make sure the PR bumph is clear and doesn't cause 28 pages of MoDaCo speculation about if its true or not!
7) Stop making asshat ideas become reality, if it sounds stupid in your head its going to upset the great unwashed (the punters)

So Orange management, your homework from todays lesson is stop being crap and get yourself back to being a nice network to be on (circa 2003/2004), and stop doing stupid things that cause people to phone up or leave for pastures new.

There, I have said it now, don't start crying, its not going to solve any of the problems is it now, go wipe away those tears and get on with making my dinner, and get me a beer whilst your in the kitchen.
