Google's rumoured GPhone has been announced however it is in fact not a phone but merely a free Linux-based operating system that will be pre-installed on phones from various manufacturers.
Quote:
Google has unveiled its phone platform, Android. It's yet another Linux OS, freely licensed, and will appear in devices in the second half of next year. Google has signed up over 30 partners including Qualcomm, Motorola, HTC and operators including Deutsche Telekom for the "Open Handset Alliance".
CEO Eric Schmidt described it as "the first truly open platform for mobile devices." Android, named after the start-up company Google acquired in 2005, encompasses middleware and applications as well as the base kernel. An SDK is promised for download next Monday under an Apache license. However, the ad-supported model will take a while to shake out.
That's a bit of a disappointment as an actual Google phone would no doubt have shaken things up a little...

O2 have announced that from the 1st October, customers will be able to (for the hardly pricey sum of £7.50 a month) buy a bolt-on that will allow them unlimited mobile internet access.
The catch? It's not really unlimited. Like Orange who announced back in June that they would be bringing in a flat rate "unlimited" package that turned out not to be so unlimited, O2 have capped the data at a rather paltry 200MB a month. Admittedly it's better than the Orange offer.
More data is available, but you'll need to fork out £30 a month for a 3GB cap.
Is this O2 leading people to buy the iPhone when it comes out on 9th November? Or are they just trying to stay in the market?

Apple and O2 have announced the release of the Apple iPhone which will take place on 9th November 2007. With the phone having been previously released in the USA this should stem the flow of unlocked iPhone's heading over the water from the west!
Expect to be forced into signing up to an 18 month contract on a tariff of £35 (200 minutes and 200 texts), £45 (600 minutes and 500 texts) or £55 per month (1200 minutes and 500 texts). On the plus side, these all include unlimited mobile data usage with a fair use policy.

Not that we'd promote the illegal downloading of any sort of copyrighted software, music or video, but uTorrent has announced that there is mobile version of their lightweight BT client being released tomorrow (Wed 25th July 2007). TorrentFreak is suggesting that this will work in a very similar way to their web front in that you can control the client on your PC from your mobile phone. The only difference is that this is a client, not a web front.

Rumours are rife about the iPhone with its first release being in the US on Friday (my birthday for anyone wanting to send me one!), however the European market has been waiting for an announcement regarding an operator. The latest seems to be that Vodafone will be the operator behind the European roll-out.
Should we really be interested in the iPhone though? The latest rumoured specifications leave a lot to be desired with no 3G, MMS, copy/paste facility, large OS footprint (700MB?!), Flash present on the phone but not supported by the web browser, a camera that takes pictures but wont record videos and average call quality!
Should the Windows Mobile platform be so worried about the iPhone after all? Despite all of the above the answer is still yes, Apple have a tendency to produce effective marketing and aesthetically attractive devices so of course people will buy them by the bucket load!

YouTube has finally gone mobile and made its most popular videos available through a mobile portal which can be found at m.youtube.com for users who can view 3gp videos on their mobile devices. Visitors to the site will be warned on their first visit that they will likely incur high data costs if they're not on an unlimited data tariff:
"YouTube Mobile is a data intensive application. We highly recommend that you upgrade to an unlimited data plan with your mobile service provider to avoid additional charges."
For more information simply visit m.youtube.com on your mobile device, don't forget that you can visit MSMobileNews.com on your mobile device now too by visiting www.MSMobileNews.mobi.

As we announced at the beginning of last month, Orange are launching a flat rate internet package, which we all hoped would rival T-Mobile's web'n'walk service. However, according to The Register, they plan to cap the so-called "unlimited" package at just 30MB!
To put that into perspective, we at msmobilenews.com have done a little research and according to optimizationweek.com the average web page is approximately 130KB in size, which means that you would be able to download 230 pages, and that's not including any emails you download with attachments too.
So, the big question is: would you go for this? If you're stuck in a contract there's not really much you can do. Let us know by using the comment form below and the poll on the right. If we get enough responses to the poll, we'll pass the details onto our contacts at Orange (we'll just leave the comments on the website though - as always, we respect your privacy).
