Despite Cisco Systems holding the rights to the name Steve Jobs has announced the Apple iPhone, a 3-in-1 device that offers users media playback, telephony and mobile Internet.

Probably most controversially, Apple has chosen to ditch the classic iPod wheel for navigation, opting instead for a fullscreen/touchscreen mechanism. The device also only offers 2.5G, that means no 3G download speeds, something that you'd have expected from such a release. Having said that, the decision to omit such technology was most probably to preserve what sacred battery life the device has in the first place. The iPhone features a 2 mega-pixel camera and will work with both PCs and Macs and will be available in the USA in June 2007, Europe in Q4 2007 and Asia in 2008. There will be two models, a 4GB for US$499 and an 8GB model for US$599, both of which are prices with a 24 month Cingular contract.

One thing's for certain, there'll be a big buzz surrounding the phone's release, that "i" prefix makes people feel all warm and funny inside and it'll no doubt come bundled with those legendary (and poor sounding!) iPod headphones.

Orange have released a statement in reaction to the iPhone's announcement, it reads as follows:

"Today's launch of Apple’s iPhone is another example of how the world of entertainment technology is converging. It reinforces our belief here at Orange that we shall see many more similar moves in the future. We have already seen our own Music Player service grow rapidly in the last year to average 100,000 single downloads per month, with over 500,000 tracks to choose from currently. Apple's entry into the market will no doubt stimulate even further interest in mobile music services."

"Europe is undergoing a digital revolution and Orange, Apple and other key companies are at the forefront of that. As the technology and entertainment industries merge over the next few years, consumers will be able to do things they previously only ever dreamt of and will be able to access all the services they need from a single provider”
