Vital Engineering, creators of the excellant Bluetooth OBD transmitter, have announced a beta of their monitoring software and this time it's for Smartphone!
For those of you not 'up' on the technicalities of today's modern cars; the OBD port is basically a link to your car's brain (ECU) which will allow you to monitor the status of the sensors that the ECU uses to run your car. Things like throttle position sensor, knock sensor, crank sensor, cam sensor, idle speed sensor, rpm etc. The software can even switch off the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), which is very handy. Normally, you need specialist hand-held 'consoles' which allow you to monitor and adjust things on-the-fly but these can cost around ã3000 (in the case of nissan at least).
Some time ago, Vital Engineering announced the release of their Bluetooth OBD transmitter that plugs into your car's OBD port and transmits the data to either a laptop or PocketPC with Vital's software running on it. Now Vital have announced a beta version for Smartphone!
You might be wondering how a Windows Mobile geek knows so much about this kind of thing? Well, i used to do Motorsport Engineering and my god how i would have loved to walk into uni, switch on my phone and be able to see what a car is doing at any given time. This type of thing makes diagnostics a whole lot easier at a fraction of the cost. ã3000 vs ã200, you do the math.
